Power outages 

Parts of George are experiencing power outages in different areas due to the bad weather conditions. Electrical teams are dispatched to various areas.

*Fairy Knowe power line from Ebb and Flow is off. (repairs to continue this morning)

*Farmlands in Geelhoutboom are to be switched off for repair work. ETR is 3 hours. 

*Portion of Denneoord (St. Pauls, Wellington, 9th Avenue, 10th Avenue). (repairs to continue this morning)

*Power outage at George Street, Blanco. (Power outage at Boekenhout Street, Hoekwil. (repairs to continue this morning)

*Power outage in Saasveld. (biggest portion restored – Nelson Mandela University still down)

*Power outages in Wilderness and Kleinkrantz are due to an Eskom trip. Four lines have fallen to the ground and all the lines have to be replaced.

The repairs work will continue this morning.

Thursday 11 July 2024 @ 00h30 George Municipality confirms that the entire Geelhoutboom and surroundings currently has no power. Due to strong winds, infrastructures got damaged, the municipality are busy repairing, and we have no ETR as of yet.

Good morning,

Eskom says that load shedding will be escalated to stage 6 on Friday to Sunday 12:00, then stage 5 on Sunday from 12:00.

We see schedules of up to 11 hours per day.

SCWISP have upgraded and secured batteries but will struggle, particularly during extended Stage 6 outages, especially our upload providers - Fibre will go down, we will then have to change over manually every time to backup fibre.

That's because most tower batteries require about half a day to fully recharge, which is near impossible when the power cuts off for at least 11 of a day's 24 hours.

Our network has been setup with technology to run on BGP and OSPF so our main core routers work overtime to keep you online.

We will make sure our towers and fibre stay online as far as we can.

UPDATE (9 Aug 2023): “The Openserve network remains robust due to our investment in other international cable capacity, hence all Openserve IP Transit services (WebReach) traffic have been automatically re-routed, ensuring our customers stay seamlessly connected.”

UPDATE (6 Sept 2023): As the South Africa landing partner for the WACS and SAT-3 consortiums, which includes other major South African and Global Telecoms businesses, Openserve is pleased that the restoration work on both undersea cables that experienced a break recently is progressing well. 

 

We have been collaborating with the consortium partners to facilitate the restoration of the cables and anticipate the WACS Cable will be restored by 06 September 2023.

 

Although the impact on Openserve was limited due to our investment in other international cable capacity, we are delighted with the progress made as it aids the restoration of our customers’ latency and redundancy on the WACS cable.

“This was necessary due to the failure of 8 generating units overnight and the excessive reliance on OCGTs and pumped storage generation that is rapidly depleting these reserves.”

Load-shedding is upon us and it looks like it’s here to stay for some time.

If your ADSL, Fixed-LTE, Fibre or Wireless connection is connected to a router and the power goes out, your Internet is gone.

When load-shedding strikes, thousands of clients lose their connections.

When power is restored, your router needs to establish a connection with the network or nearest tower in order to get Internet access again.

It can take a while for towers and exchanges that went down to power back up. If a large area is affected, then everyone will be trying to connect at the same time and will need to wait their turn in the “queue”.

*We do not advise our clients to reset their router after their load shedding cycle has ended*

Once your power has been restored, you may need to allow a few minutes to get back online.

Our batteries generally have a capacity of six to 12 hours, depending on the site category, and require 12 to 18 hours to recharge. The constant outages are starting to have a direct impact on the performance of the batteries. If outages continue, the battery’s integrity is compromised because of insufficient time to recharge and due to the excessive drain on the battery.

Once power is fully depleted, the tower stops working entirely. Depending on the configuration of nearby towers, this may cause customers to experience an intermittent service or an area to black out entirely.
